Oviedo-Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce Awards
TASTE OF OVIEDO POSTER CONTEST WINNER

Oviedo, Fla. (February 8, 2017) – Margie Sloane won the 2017 Taste of Oviedo poster contest with her entry titled “Oviedo on the Park Concert”. Taste of Oviedo, presented by Air Flow Designs Heating & Air Conditioning, is on Saturday, March 11, at Oviedo Mall with free admission.

Driven by a desire to showcase the beauty in nature and this great community, Margie Sloane spends as much time as possible behind the lens of her camera perfecting her photography skills. What was once a point and shoot hobby, has become a passion for capturing life and sharing the joy. “I find I look at the world around me now as a potential subject for my camera lens, from the tiniest wildflower to the widest vista of ocean or mountain range,” she says. “I love to make people smile with my photo art images.”

Margie Sloane is no stranger to winning, as she was also the poster artist in 2014 and 2016. Attendees can meet Margie and also get a chance to purchase the 2017 Taste poster at Taste of Oviedo. Margie has been a resident of Oviedo and the surrounding area for 29 years.

Each year the Taste of Oviedo committee opens the Taste of Oviedo poster contest to the public, with entries due in early January. Any medium of art is accepted.

Caryn Dahm and her husband, Daniel, are enjoying raising 3 kids in this great community. She is an Italian New Yorker by birth, but raised from a young age in Florida. As a result, Caryn has a great appreciation for family and sunshine. Some of her favorite things to paint revolve around cooking, food and being near the water.

After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1997 with a degree in visual communication, she began working as a designer for the Orlando Sentinel. Since that time, she has enjoyed working professionally as an artist and graphic designer for large and small clients. Caryn teaches both art and graphic design classes as well as hosting an annual summer art camp at a local venue.
While she works quite a bit on logos and branding projects, Caryn’s favorite jobs are commissioned watercolors. Many of the custom pieces that she creates revolve around special recipes, locations or even memories of family vacations.
Caryn has won multiple awards, which she attributes to hard work and God’s blessings. Her hope is to provide artwork that savors the simple joys of life and can be shared among family and friends.

A former Navy and civilian nurse, Margie Sloane’s creative inclination led her to pursue a career in journalism, editing and  photography. Over 28 years, the award winning writer has enjoyed entertaining, inspiring and moving people with the written  word and, in the past decade, has taken particular pleasure in viewing the world through her camera lens. Bird watching  enthusiasts, Margie and her husband Rich, spend as much time as possible hiking in conservation areas, binoculars in hand, and  traveling the country to search out and photograph wildlife, flowers, and landscapes. “I must admit that time seems to stand still  when I am tromping around the woods with my camera,” she says. “I don’t feel the heat or the cold and I have to remind myself to  stop and eat. I find wonder in the tiniest wildflower and marvel at the birds and butterflies all around us. Mastering photography  and learning how to create art from digital images is my joy.”

A resident of Oviedo for 26 years, Margie raised two daughters and has six grandchildren. President of Write Design, she’s been very active in the Oviedo-Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce and is one of the founding members of the Oviedo Businesswomen Network. In addition to marketing and event planning, she has enjoyed using her artistic abilities to showcase her community in both word and imagery.

Margie is an active member of the Oviedo Photo Club, the Oviedo Historical Society, TOPPS, and the Women’s Club at UCF, and is a staff writer for the Oviedo Winter Springs Life Magazine. She is always working to hone her photography skills to capture striking images and create unique digital art from her photographs.

Picture1

As an award-winning professional designer, artist and co-owner of RagTag Rubies, Caryn has worked for numerous clients, both large and small. She has served professionally as an artist, consultant, creative director and designer. Both art and design have always been a part of Caryn’s life. Painting and creating things brought her much joy growing up — and still does.
“There is just something spectacular about sitting down with that sheet of stiff, white, empty paper and watching it transform into something meaningful.”
When creating art, watercolors are her absolute favorite medium. Caryn loves the soft edges and the swirling effect you can achieve with the colors by mixing and blending them together on the wet paper. They are also a great medium for artists with young children because watercolors dry quickly and the results are immediate.
Caryn’s main inspiration comes from things that she loves and cares about. Having lived in Oviedo for most of her married life and raising her three kids there has given her a passion to paint local scenes as well as Florida landscapes. Being of Italian heritage, Caryn is also passionate about food. Many of her wall art pieces boast fresh fruits and family recipes. She’s particularly interested in marrying her Christian faith with her work and hopes that through her imagery and designs she can refresh and inspire others.
